Project Overview

We were appointed to carry out the full electrical installation for Kingsway View Care Home, a purpose-built 72-bed residential facility in Derby. Designed to provide high-quality accommodation and care for elderly residents, including those living with dementia, the development features en-suite bedrooms, communal lounges, dining rooms, therapy spaces, a commercial kitchen and laundry, and landscaped gardens.
We delivered a detailed and future-proofed electrical installation that met all healthcare regulatory standards while prioritising resident comfort, staff usability, and energy efficiency.

Objectives

  • Provide a fully compliant and coordinated electrical installation suitable for a residential care environment.
  • Ensure all systems are easy to maintain, and compatible with healthcare-grade technology.
  • Deliver integrated lighting, fire safety, nurse call, and access control systems to enhance care and security.
  • Complete works in line with a phased construction programme, coordinating closely with other M&E and construction trades.

Scope of Works

LV Power & Distribution

  • Installation of main LV panel, sub-main cabling, and distribution boards across three floors.
  • Radial and ring final circuits for power to all bedrooms, staff areas, kitchens, and communal spaces.
  • Full installation of surface and concealed containment (trunking, tray, conduit) throughout the building.

Lighting & Emergency Lighting

  • High-efficiency LED lighting with automatic controls in corridors and communal areas.
  • Resident bedroom fittings selected for safety and ease of use, with bedside switching and staff override.
  • Emergency luminaires installed and tested to BS 5266, with central testing facilities.

Life Safety & Communication Systems

  • Addressable L1 fire alarm system with bedroom detection and corridor sounders.
  • Wired nurse call system with corridor displays and staff paging functionality.
  • Secure fob-entry access control at main entry points, staff-only areas, and dementia care units.
  • Internal and external CCTV system with DVR storage, plus intruder alarm covering key zones.

Structured Cabling & Data

  • CAT6 cabling throughout for telephony, staff Wi-Fi, PC points, and smart TV connectivity in all rooms.
  • Central comms rack with patch panels, structured labelling, and fibre connection readiness.

Specialist Areas

  • Electrical supplies and containment for industrial catering and laundry equipment, with isolators and compliance to heat-load ventilation standards.

  • Low-energy external lighting, EV charger containment, and gate access control systems.

Project Challenges

Working in a specialist care environment required strict attention to resident safety, with the installation of anti-ligature and low-glare lighting, low-level sockets, and clearly marked emergency call points. The project followed a phased handover schedule, which demanded precision planning and close coordination with plumbing, HVAC, and finishes teams to avoid delays.

In addition, the electrical installation was subject to rigorous quality assurance processes, including NICEIC inspections, building control oversight, and Care Quality Commission (CQC) readiness checks to ensure full compliance.

OUTCOME

We successfully delivered a complete, compliant, and future-ready electrical package for Kingsway View Care Home. We’re thrilled to say that our installation was praised for its quality of workmanship, attention to detail, and seamless integration of life safety and communication systems. The care home opened on schedule and now offers a safe, comfortable, and high-tech environment for both residents and staff.
